What is Fiber Drop Cable?

What is Fiber Drop Cable?

Fiber drop cable is a key part of the FTTH network. Not only it forms the
final external link between the user and the feeder cable, but also it makes
the fiber much closer to users. There are some affects such as network reliability,
operational flexibility and the cost of FTTH deployment, so it is very
essential to choose the correct fiber drop cable. Although there are many different
types of fiber drop cables in the market, but flat drop cables, figure-eight
drop cables, and round drop cables are still the three most popular fiber optic
drop cables.

Flat Type Drop Cable

Flat type drop cable has a flat appearance and is usually composed of a
polyethylene sheath, multiple fibers and two insulating strength components to
provide high compression resistance. Fiber drop cable usually contains one or
two optical fibers before, but now it can contain up to 12 or more fibers.

Figure-8 Drop Cable

Figure-8 drop cable has a central tube cable fixed to a steel wire; it
is supposed to combine the installation of the messenger wire and optical cable
into a single process. Figure-8 drop cable is a self-supporting cable, and is
designed to use in outdoor aerial applications. Figure-8 drop cable usually
contains 2 to 48 fibers.

Round Drop Cable

Round drop cable usually contains a single bend-insensitive optical
fiber, which is buffered and surrounded by an insulating strength member and an
outer jacket. It can provide durability and reliability at the drop section of
the network.

Conclusion

With the development of telecommunication, FTTH is becoming more and
more essential to the world. Fiber optic drop cable is widely used in FTTH
access network. Flat drop cables, figure-eight drop cables, and round drop
cables are still the three most popular fiber optic drop cables. You can choose
widely between them.
