Basic Knowledge About OLT

As telecommunications network technologies
become more advanced and mature, fiber to the home (FTTH) networks are
beginning to replace existing copper cable infrastructure, such as telephone
lines and coaxial cables. Generally, FTTH broadband connections consist of two
types of systems, called Active Optical Network (AON) and Passive Optical
Network
(PON). And most FTTH deployments tend to use PON because of its low
cost and high performance. As one of the indispensable components of PON, the optical line terminal (OLT) plays a vital role in the performance of the entire
network connection.

What is OLT?

OLT stands for Optical Line Terminal. OLT
equipment is an important central office equipment. The OLT includes a central
processing unit, passive optical network card, gateway router, and voice
gateway upstream card. It can be connected to the front end switch through a
network cable and converted into an optical signal.

The Functions of OLT

The main function of OLT is to convert the
electrical signal used by the service provider equipment and the optical fiber
signal used by the passive optical network (PON), and coordinate multiplexing
between the end user equipment ONU (optical network unit) or ONT (optical
network terminal)

By using the OLT, the standard signal used by
the FIOS service provider is converted into the frequency and framing used by
the PON system.

Coordinate multiplexing between conversion equipment
located on the optical line terminal (OLT) at the customer’s premises.

The Features of OLT

Control the flow of information upstream and
downstream.

Convert the standard signal used by the fiber
optic service (
FIOS) to the frequency and framing used by the PON system.

The wavelength division multiplexing device is
used to perform electrical/optical conversion on the serial data of the
downlink frame and perform wavelength division multiplexing on it.

Multiple analog or digital signals, which are coordinated
and combined into one signal (called multiplexing), occur between ONT
conversion equipment.

A control device used to control the downstream
frame processing device and the upstream frame processing device by using
variables and timing signals from the control signal generating device.

Conclusion

OLT can help effectively reduce network
construction costs while providing guarantees of high bandwidth and high
integration. It is also an ideal and constructive solution for the FTTx
project.
